How To Your Health Sprouted Flour Co. Got Started
I have always loved baking and cooking. As an artist, my canvas is the dinner table and my medium is healthy foods.
Over the years of trying to take better care of myself I developed a passion for hacking through the jungle of “nutrition” information available to discover the truth concerning the proper relationship to food and proper preparations of foods for the maximum benefit to our bodies. The more complicated my research, the more simple and clear the answer came: Eat a variety of all foods God made available to us in as pure form as possible. This led to more research encompassing the preparation of foods before industrialization; during the times when cancer and heart disease were rarities at best.
Armed with this wonderful information, I began counseling friends and groups of folks who wanted to make positive lifestyle changes as well. When we talked about the fabulous benefits of sprouted grains and how our ancestors would harvest grains and leave it in the fields to germinate (sprout) before threshing and storing it, and about a simple way to modern-day germinate or sprout grains for baking, the answer was always, &ldsI don’t have the time nor the inclination to do that. Can’t you just do it for me?“ And so I did. And that’s how To Your Health Sprouted Flour Co. came to be.
Starting in my kitchen baking for a few friends, word quickly spread and opportunities arose to bake for customers of several local and regional CSAs and co–ops. I outgrew my kitchen space and wanted to get my product in several additional markets, so I opened a commercial kitchen in our new barn in September of 2006. We obtained state and federal licensing as a food processor. Our little company is still growing today! In February of 2008 we began to offer our sprouted organic grains and flours for sale and discontinued our baked goods. In October of 2009 we were certified organic by Oregon Tilth and in August of 2010 we received kosher certification for all our sprouted grain products. In August of 2010 we moved our operations into a 7,200 square foot new building. Our steady growth has ensured the quality of our products and there are still just a few of us here doing the sprouting, drying, and milling fresh to order.
To Your Health’s sprouted bread flours are beautifully fluffy and will bake up great in any of your favorite bread or pastry recipes. We offer whole grain wheat, spelt, rye barley, corn, millet, and brown rice flours, as well as our sprouted, dried whole grains to those who want to mill at home.
Every opportunity I get to sprout and bake is pure joy for me. The beauty of sprouting grains and the benefits it offers are so valuable to our health. Knowing how good sprouted flour is for you (it digests like a tomato, not a potato! – Click here to read about the benefits of sprouted flour), I’ll always remain zealous in my efforts to make wonderfully nutritious sprouted flours for all you folks who enjoy it. While we have our crew who is always busy in our facility, it would not have been possible without my sweet, supportive husband Jeff who built our facilities for us so I could help others eat healthy. He now works full time with me in the business. We make a good partnership. And of course, he loves sprouted breads, especially with raw butter and honey.
